The West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters Memorial walkway completion is underway with the installation of the final six of 14 wrought iron sculptures. Each one depicts police and firefighters in action. The recently installed scenes are titled: Courtroom, Life Flight, Bomb Squad, Traffic Accident, Toxic Spill, and Riot. Artist Brimsley Tyrell (photos below) was commissioned in 2002 to create the pieces, and, although all 14 were completed back then, funding issues delayed the installation of the final six.

A $25,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources allowed organizers of the memorial fund to finish the project. The West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters Fund, which provides scholarships to the children of fallen police and firefighters, maintains the memorial. The sculptures run along the walkway of Rocky River Drive overlooking the Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation.

Help for Small Businesses. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has created a new 100% guaranteed loan program, America's Recovery Capital (ARC), to help small businesses that are suffering hardship as a result of the slow economy. The loan provides temporary assistance for businesses to make principle and interest payments on qualifying debt. ARC is a no-interest loan, has no SBA fees associated with it, and can be used on small business debt including mortgages, term and revolving lines of credit, capital leases, credit card obligations, and notes payable to vendors, suppliers, and utilities. Repayment is deferred for 12 months and after this period the borrowers pay back the loan principal over a period of five years. For more information on ARC loans, visit the SBA website.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in our Pizza for a Pint blood drive on July 24th. We partnered with the American Red Cross, Fairview Hospital, and Kamm’s Plaza as well as neighborhood pizza vendors and area restaurants to bring a bloodmobile to Kamm’s Plaza that day. Plenty of prizes, discounts at area merchants, and a free t-shirt were given to those who donated.

The Red Cross collected 60 pints of blood -- an impressive number for a summer drive.

The Chatfield Block Club is making a difference! They received a $3,000 grant from Neighborhood Connections and raised an additional $7,000 to fund the Alger Cemetery Awareness Project. More than 6,000 people are in the 12-acre city-owned cemetery here, including namesake founder Oswald Kamm and many of the original settlers of Kamm’s Corners. To improve Querulous Street, which runs through the cemetery, the club cleaned up litter and debris in monthly safety sweeps. They worked with Westpark Lutheran Elementary School to plant flowers at the Bradgate Avenue entrance of the cemetery and with U-Haul to improve the northern entrance gateway, which borders U-Haul’s property. Last month, the club partnered with Councilman Keane and the City to install 10 solar powered streetlights along Querulous Street to provide a well-lighted path through the cemetery. Our gratitude goes to the Chatfield Block Club for their success in helping preserve an important piece of our heritage.
