Your last chance this summer to join us under the stars for Asphalt Cinema! On Friday, August 18, bring lawn chairs and blankets to the parking lot at West 168th Street and Albers Avenue (behind Walgreens) for an evening that begins with creative games and activities for children at 10 booths operated by local merchants starting at 6:30 p.m. Members of ClevelandBikes will conduct a bike safety training session for children who bring their bikes, starting at 7 p.m. A free bike helmet and lock will be given to all children who complete the short course and demonstrate an understanding of bike safety. Free balloon creatures by Balloon Man Gene will be available. A bubble gum blowing contest for all age groups takes place with prizes, followed by Madagascar—an animated movie starting at dusk, rated PG. Buy fresh hot popcorn, Italian ice, and cold beverages. Asphalt Cinema is presented by Downtown Kamm’s Corners.

RETAIL DESIGN ON A DIME

A Project for Artists, Designers and Local Merchants

Goal:  To improve the visual impact of nine Cleveland neighborhood stores by connecting a talented artist or designer with an independent merchant.

Display windows and interior spaces are not always effectively used by independent retailers to attract customers. Retailers often think they lack the resources and/or ability to successfully create storefront window area displays or interesting interiors. Retail Design on a Dime will demonstrate that a limited amount of funds coupled with the talent and vision of artists and designers can result in greater curb appeal. Selected artists and designers will collaborate with one of nine local merchants to create original installations that reflect the nature of the business and help draw customers to the stores.

Bob Michael, owner of Crown Rubber Stamp & Supply Company, has been selected to represent Downtown Kamm’s Corners merchants and has agreed to participate in Retail Design on a Dime.

Artists Jessica Maloney and Zak Knudtson were chosen for this project and upon its completion will present an education session on visual merchandising for other Downtown merchants.

A formal unveiling of the neighborhood projects will take place at a press event in September with Mayor Frank Jackson in the City Hall rotunda.

The City of Cleveland, Ohio Arts Council, Cleveland Neighborhood Development Coalition (CNDC), and Kamm’s Corners Development Corporation provided funding and technical support for this project.

Late Breaking Storefront Renovation News...

Any day now, you can enjoy outdoor dinning on the patio at West Park Station, located at 17015 Lorain Avenue. The new restaurant features an Irish, American, and Italian menu. Jason Salupo, the restaurant’s proprietor, used the City of Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program (SRP) to renovate the former Hastings Home Health Care location into a police and fire-themed restaurant, including historic photos of West Park. A red, white, and blue projecting sign in the shape of a badge pinpoints the spot for good food and fun.

Construction is underway for a new Irish pub and restaurant opening in the former West End Appliance location at 17119 Lorain Avenue. Owner Patrick Campbell is also developing plans to add an Irish Dance Studio in the building. The SRP will provide design assistance and a 40% rebate (up to $25,000) for the exterior renovation.

Watch for construction to begin soon at the Far-Mor Café, 15809 Lorain Avenue. New owner Joseph Coreno will use the SRP to restore the transoms and bulkheads, install simulated second floor balconies, and add creative new signage for the business.

The former East of Chicago Pizza building, located at 14747 Lorain Avenue, will be soon be the place for New Orleans-flavored chicken, buttermilk biscuits, and red beans and rice. Tony Smith, owner of 12 Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits restaurants throughout Northeast Ohio, will open lucky number 13 in Kamm’s Corners. The SRP will provide assistance to transform the building and add a colorful mural.
